Czech government withstands no-confidence vote

Prague 3rd September : The Czech government headed by Prime Minister Petr Fiala withstood a no-confidence vote in the lower house of parliament mainly because of the treatment of the energy crisis.
The total of 184 parliamentarians in the Chamber of Deputies voted on Friday, with 100 supporting the government and 84, comprising the members of the opposition ANO party as well as the Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) party, who voted for no-confidence, as per the lower house of the parliament.

Another 16 lawmakers did not take part in the vote.

A majority of at minimum 101 votes in the 200-seat Chamber of Deputies was needed to overthrow the government, Xinhua news agency reported.

The debate in the parliamentary chamber lasted more than 20 hours, starting on a Thursday afternoon.Apart from a corruption scandal involving the former head of an intelligence agency, the debate was primarily focused on the issue of inflation and what opponents called the government’s inability of addressing the cost of living.of living a decent life.

The present Czech government, made up of a centre-right-led coalition led by the Civic Democratic Party (ODS) has been elected in October, following a tight election that pitted the former coalition government headed by ANO.
