Rome, 31 December : .Italy has reported more than 100,000 coronavirus cases for the first time ever.An earlier record was set Wednesday, with 98.030 cases. However, the increase on Thursday was the greatest in one day over the past two years of Covid-19’s pandemic.
This Thursday figure is more than 2% of an estimated 6,000,000 cases that have been recorded since the outbreak of the pandemic.
This high incidence in Italy is part a larger trend throughout Europe that was fueled mainly by Omicron, the highly transmissible variant of the virus.
Italy is third among the European Union’s countries with the highest number of Covid-19-related infections, after France and Germany.
Despite a successful vaccine rollout, the increase in cases is still happening.Nearly 86 percent of people over 12 years old had been fully immunized in the country as of Thursday.
