Khartoum 25 Aug : John Godfrey arrived in Khartoum to take on the post of the first US Ambassador to Sudan in more than 25 years according to the American Embassy in Khartoum announced in an announcement.In a tweet published on Wednesday Godfrey declared: “I am thrilled to have arrived in Sudan.I look forward to strengthening relationships between Americans and Sudanese and to assisting the Sudanese people’s aspirations towards freedom and justice, peace, and an eventual transition towards democracy.”
In 1993 the US identified Sudan as a country that supports terror, and accused Khartoum of being a supporter of Al Qaeda, whose founder Osama bin Laden was in Sudan between 1992 until 1996.
In 1997 the US decreased the status of its diplomatic presence in Sudan from the status of ambassador to that of of charge d’affaires.It also placed sanctions on Khartoum’s economy unilaterally.
Khartoum for alleged support of terrorist acts, Xinhua news agency reported.
In December, Washington announced its intention to elevate its diplomatic presence with Khartoum up to the status of ambassador.
In May of 2020, Sudan was appointed in May 2020 Nureldin Satti as the first Ambassador of Sudan to the US in 23 years.
The US removed Sudan from the list of countries that support terror in December of 2020.
