Jordan warns of a decline in international support for refugees in the region

Amman 12 September : Jordan has warned against the reduction in international assistance for refugees in the Middle East and the related UN institutions.
Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi made these remarks at a discussion with UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi in Amman in which he stressed the importance of mobilizing together to ensure an adequate life for refugees and assist host countries in shouldering the responsibility of hosting refugees, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

Safadi applauded the relationship that exists between Jordan and UNHCR to provide essential services to 1.3 million Syrians living in Jordan, of which only 10 percent reside in refugee camps as per the Foreign Ministry statement.

He also emphasized the role of UNHCR in aiding refugees and ensuring their cause is on the international agenda.

The two sides have agreed that they would intensify efforts to garner the international community behind refugees.

The UN official praised Jordan’s role in hosting and providing Syrian refugees with essential health and educational services.

On Sunday the Jordanian Premier Minister Bisher Khasawneh talked with Grandi the possibilities of collaboration between Jordan and UN agencies that provide humanitarian and aid services to Syrian refugees The state-run Petra news agency reported.

King Abdullah II of Jordan received Grandi on Sunday.He stressed the importance of the world community to take on its obligations towards the host country, particularly in the context of issues related to world food security as per an announcement by the Royal Hashemite Court.

According to the UN, Jordan now hosts approximately 675,000 registered refugees from Syria who fled in 2011 after the war in their country caused unimaginable suffering to the people of Jordan.

The majority of Syrian refugees in Jordan reside in its villages and towns within local communities.

Only 17 percent of the population lives in the two camps for refugees, Za’atari and Azraq.
