Sanya Malhotra is eagerly anticipating the release of her upcoming films, “Kathal” and “Jawan,” the latter starring Shah Rukh Khan. After experimenting with her projects in 2022, Sanya has an interesting lineup this year, including “Sam Bahadur” with Vicky Kaushal and the Hindi remake of the Malayalam film “The Great Indian Kitchen.”
In an interview with indianexpress.com, Sanya discussed how her political beliefs are always at the forefront when she chooses films and expressed her excitement for “Jawan,” calling it a dream come true.
Sanya accepted the film “Kathal” after hearing the one-line pitch. This decision was influenced by the love she received for “Pagglait” (2021), which was made by the same production team. She explained, “Right after ‘Pagglait,’ Guneet (Monga) called me and said she had a very interesting script.
Yasho (director of ‘Kathal’) was still working on the script then.My collaboration with Sikhya, Balaji, and Netflix during ‘Pagglait’ was so fruitful that I couldn’t say no to the new project.Whenever I choose a film, my politics and the potential to inspire both myself and the audience are always important considerations.”
Regarding “Kathal,” a social satirical film, Sanya emphasized its combination of comedy, drama, romance, and a strong social message. The film touched her heart deeply, making it impossible for her to decline the opportunity. She described it as the kind of film that families can enjoy together.
Sanya’s career took off with her impressive debut in Aamir Khan’s “Dangal,” a film that captivated audiences with its story and emotions. She went on to star in critically acclaimed films such as “Pataakha,” “Badhaai Ho,” and “Photograph.” When asked if prioritizing her politics and personal values when selecting films comes with a cost, Sanya replied, “I think things are going pretty well.I have been fortunate to work with exceptional directors and be a part of some remarkable films after ‘Dangal.’ It’s important for me to portray women brilliantly on screen, and I take it as my responsibility.”
Will we ever see Sanya in a glamorous role in a mainstream commercial film? She responded, “Why not? I haven’t done anything glamorous yet. However, I’m drawn to characters that convey a message.I prefer roles where the character’s presence matters and contributes significantly.I’d always like to portray powerful women on screen.”
Sanya finished shooting for “Jawan” last year and expressed her excitement about working with director Atlee, Shah Rukh Khan, Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, and others. She shared her joy about finally being able to talk openly about the project and fulfilling her dream of working with SRK.Sanya eagerly awaits the release of the film and expressed happiness at the thought of being alongside Shah Rukh Khan, describing it as a dream role and film.
