UNSMIL called for the Libyan parties to settle disputes through dialogue , and reiterated that the political impasse that is currently brewing can only be solved through inclusive elections, Xinhua news agency reported.

The mission reminded all participants of the obligations they have under international law to safeguard civilians and civilian infrastructure, such as detention centers.

On Friday violent clashes began to break out in Tripoli between militia groups that support Tripoli’s Government of National Unity and those who support the government that is appointed by the east-based House of Representatives, the parliament which is seeking to take the power of Tripoli.

The House of Representatives in March approved a new government led by the former Interior Minister Fathi Bashagha.

However, the Premier Abdul-Hamed Dbeibah refuses to hand the power over, saying that his government will continue to work and only hand over the office to an elected administration.

Libya has been battling chaotic political turmoil and instability for years after the late dictator Muammar Gaddafi’s death in 2011.
