New Delhi, Aug 31 : Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting believes that hard-hitting superstar Tim David can be a crucial player in Australia’s team and could aid them in winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the coming months.

A batsman who can be described as an all-rounder with 14 T20Is in his repertoire during the time with the Singapore national team, David is eligible to switch sides and has scored more than 2500 runs in rapid time in tournaments in Australia, England and India.

“I would like to have Tim David (Tim David) in the team.

He has seen improvement over the past few of years, and I think that he’s the kind of player who can take the Australian team in a World Cup in that finishing kind of position,” said Ponting in the most recent episode of The ICC Review.

“Two years ago he was struggling to play in the BBL.He was an insignificant player for the Perth Scorchers, then moved to Hobart Hurricanes. He’s been doing really well down there.” he added.

According to ICC Hall of Famer Ponting, David is going through his best form of his career at the moment.

“He’s performed very well in the IPL games he played last season, and he’s performed very well in England and in each other competition he’s played across the world. He’s likely in his best form in his career at the moment and when you’ve got players at the top of their abilities I think you must play them,” he said.

Averaging an average strike rate of more than 160 in the domestic T20 cricket David is an Australian great believes that David’s strength could give Australia with an additional dimension in the final moments and also sends a threatening warning to any potential opponents.

“If you were to end up with for instance, Maxwell, Stoinis, Wade and David in the middle of the order, there’s a truly powerful late-order striker team that bowling teams would not like to compete against,” he said.

“He’s likely to be 6’2 or close to 100 kg – an enormous, strong man who is able to hit the ball as well and hard as any player in the world. He’s a great fielder, and can bowl off-spin in a part-time fashion should it be required. He almost turns into a three-dimensional player which makes him more attractive to the World Cup,” he added.

While Ponting was vocal about David getting a place in the final team, the more difficult issue is likely to be who would be left out of last year’s winning Australia team to allow for David’s inclusion.

Ashton Agar played just one match in the 2021 season, while Kane Richardson and Mitchell Swepson The remaining players in the tournament – didn’t appear.

“I have gone through the (2021) squad of 15 on Tuesday They included Agar Zampa, Agar, and Swepson as three spin options.

And they’ve got Maxwell there too, who could support them with some spins on a part-time basis in the event of need,” Ponting said.

“The top order bats with Finch and Warner have been great players for a long time I’m sure there’s been a lot of speculation about Aaron Finch and his form over the past 12 months now and that was certainly not affected by his similar expulsion against Zimbabwe in the ODI match the last time.

“The talking points about their batting line-ups when you look at it, is likely to be: “Are they going to continue playing Finch in the next couple of months to prepare for the World Cup? Are there any roles in the middle order for an Steve Smith for instance?’ To be truthful, if there’s a change, it’s going be David in the middle, and I’m not sure who’s coming out,” he added.
