Guwahati 12 August : Guwahati, Aug 12 : Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has received 783.46 percent higher penalties from ticketless passengers or travelers with ticketing irregularities in the months of January and July this year, compared to the same time frame of the previous year, NFR officials announced on Friday.
The Chief Public Relations Officer at NFR Sabyasachi De said that penalty cases grew by 439.33 percent in the period from January to July this year when compared with the same timeframe of the previous year.

He stated that during the 15213 cases of ticket checking drives between January to July of this year, a sum of 35.71 crore was collected as fine.35.71 crore was collected in fines on behalf of the 4.98 lakh ticket-free passengers or travellers with tickets that were not in order.

4.05 crore was collected as penalty from the ticketless passengers.4.05 crore was taken as a penalty from ticket-less passengers or travelers with irregular tickets from the period from January to July of last year.

The total number of un-booked baggage cases were discovered and a penalty of 7 lakh rupees was imposed in this regard, De said.

As per the official, traveling without a valid ticket or over the authorized distances could result in an additional cost and a fare.

If a person is unable or unwilling to pay upon request, he or she shall be in default of payment and could be prosecuted in accordance with the relevant section of the Railways Act, 1989.

The NFR is one of the 17 railway zones in India operates completely as well as partially in six of the eight northeastern states, excepting Meghalaya and Sikkim and in seven districts of West Bengal and five districts of north Bihar.
