Many Americans may experience a loss of sense of smell after acquiring the Covid infection.

New York, November 20, : , A new study suggests that more than one million Americans may have lost their sense of smell after months of Covid-19 treatment.
According to the study published in JAMA Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (JAMA Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery), between 750,000 and 1 million Americans who received Covid-19 reported a loss or a significant change in their senses of smell over a period of six months.

CNN reports that this estimate is probably incorrect according to researchers at Washington University School of Medicine, St.Louis.

Although most people eventually recover their senses of smell, some individuals may not be able to do so.

This is a worry because it’s compared to prior to the pandemic when only 13.3 millions of adults aged 40 or older suffered from what scientists refer as olfactory disorder (OD) and chronic olfactory disorders (COD).

The study stated that these data indicate a growing public health concern about OD, and that there is an urgent need to conduct research on Covid-19 COD.

Last year, a study found that 72% of those with Covid-19 regained their senses of smell within a month. However, for others, the process is slower.
