K’taka Health Minister complains about shortage of Vascular surgeons in the country

Bengaluru 7 August : Karnataka Health Minister Dr K.Sudhakar on Saturday expressed concern over the shortage of surgeons for vascular surgery at a time when the nation is experiencing an increase in the number of vascular diseases.
“Sadly for a population of 1.3 billion there are only about 500 specialists in vascular health.Making people aware of the importance of vascular health is crucial both in urban and rural regions,” he said.

He made the comment during the walkathon organized by the Vascular Surgeons association to mark the World Vascular Day.

The walkathon event was held in Bengaluru’s Town Hall to Kanteerava Stadium.

In a press conference at the event during the event, Minister Sudhakar declared: “We have to ensure an adherence to a rigorous health regimen to safeguard the blood vessels in our bodies.If we don’t do this it could result in serious health issues, such as aneurysms or other non-communicable diseases.These in turn can lead to life-threatening situations”.

Noting that certain people are more susceptible to cardiovascular illnesses, he said: “Every 6 seconds, someone loses a leg in the world.We must raise awareness among young people and professionals who are susceptible to problems like this due to the nature of their jobs, such as teachers, policemen, etc.who work for prolonged time periods of time.

Awareness should also be developed for professionals who be in close proximity of computers for prolonged time periods of time, and who live an active life style.”

A number of hospital specialists and vascular specialists have come forward, organized and took part in the program, which is admirable, he said.

The Karnataka government will take all measures to avoid vascular diseases he said.
