By Vivek Singh Chauhan New Delhi, Aug 6 : Millions of Indians are spending up to five hours per day on their phones every day and 5G promises revolutionize the Internet with super-fast connections and lower latency, giving gamers and OTT streaming a crucial boost, experts in the industry have stated.

The Indian gaming industry is predicted to grow to an industry worth $5 billion in 2025 with over 450 million gamers playing online in 2023.OTT streaming is growing in the country.

The number of installed units of phones with 5G capability has surpassed five million in the nation.

The 5G smartphone share was 29 percent of total shipment in the April-June timeframe this year which was the highest ever according to Counterpoint Research.

“5G will assist in improving the experience of viewers on both regular and OTT platforms.For instance, there are times when we witness poor video quality when streaming live of cricket games or other sporting events across OTT platforms.” Charu Paliwal, Research Analyst, Counterpoint Research, told IANS.

“5G can handle large bandwidth and has low latency, resulting in streaming videos in high resolution, and without buffering issues,” Paliwal said, adding that 5G will bring services like streaming and gaming to the highest level.

Nitin Bansal, MD, India Head-Networks, Market Area South East Asia, Oceania and India, Ericsson, told IANS 5G, with features like ultra-low latency and high throughput will provide a more immersive gaming experience in India.

“5G will assist in removing the heavy computational power, giving gamers faster speeds and less latency, so that gameplay will be more fluid than ever before, with no delay between the input of a gamer and game’s responseregardless of whether it’s for one VR player at home or even an esports gaming community” Bansal told IANS.

A global smartphone maker OPPO who joined forces with Reliance Jio to conduct 5G trials in India and said that Jio tested its speedy and low-latency 5G network using Oppo Reno 7 series smartphones.

“While the majority of 5G testing in India were non-standalone devices, OPPO developed its solutions on the SA network.We have also been working with major players in the industry as well as telecom operators to ensure the most complete 5G experience for our customers,” Tasleem Arif, Director of R&D and VP, OPPO India, told IANS.

“With the arrival of 5G the experience for users will change in the speed of data downloads at least three times faster efficiency in the spectrum, and extremely low latency.Next-generation technologies will be everywhere,” he added.

According to Madhav Sheth, CEO, realme India and vice president, realme, and President realme International Business Group, 5G will allow for the use of advanced technologies like IoT, AI and VR which in turn will revolutionize the creation of new services and products that could be provided to customers.

A report released this week revealed that 5G-related shipments in India rose 163 percent (year-on-year) in the April-June period and Samsung was the leader in the segment with 28 percent market share.

One out of every three smartphones shipped in Q2 2022 was a 5G capable smartphone as shipments grew 7 per cent (quarter-on-quarter), according to Cyber Media Research (CMR)’s ‘India Mobile Handset Market’ report.

Muralikrishnan B, President, Xiaomi India, told IANS that with the auction for 5G completed, we expect the demand from consumers for a well-rounded phone with 5G will only grow.

“We believe that 5G is one of the technological innovations that has the potential to transform and improve the quality of life for our nation.5G will help strengthen the AIoT ecosystem, provide the possibility of gaming in real-time and improve AR/VR experience” Muralikrishnan stated.
