In the company of family and friends close to Jackson, Wyoming, on Tuesday night, Cheney said she had given up to Hageman who led in early returns by more than 25 percentage percentage points.

She pointed out that she had won easily in the previous election for the congressional seat she holds, and acknowledged that the primary could have been the same had she not vehemently opposed Trump’s attempt to destroy the trust in the US elections system.

“I could have done it again The road was easy,” Cheney said.

“But it would have required me to join with President Trump’s lies regarding the 2020 presidential election.

This would mean me to allow his continuing efforts to undermine our system of democracy and undermine the very foundations of our country. This was a route I was unable to and would not follow.”

The race was one of the top priorities for former President George W.Bush and his associates Many of who were involved in or donated to Hageman’s campaign.

In May, Trump held a rally in Casper which is the second-largest town in the state.

In an article on his Truth Social network, Trump felicitated Hageman “on her incredible and decisive victory in Wyoming”.

“This is a fantastic result for America and a total rejection of the Unselect Committee of political Hacks and Thugs,” Trump wrote.

“Liz Cheney ought to be ashamed of her actions and the manner in which she behaved, as well as her insensitive, sanctimonious comments and actions toward others. Now she will finally be able to disappear into the abyss of political insignificance where I am sure that she will be more content than she is now.”

Cheney’s defeat is a reminder to Republicans of the danger of taking on Cheney, the president of the past.

Cheney is the daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney, wasn’t able to withstand the ire of the Trump wing even with national recognition for her name and a huge advantage in fundraising.

She has raised over $15 million as compared to Hageman’s $400,000, in what was one of the most expensive primaries in the country.

A fiercely conservative laser focused on national security, Liz Cheney was first elected to Congress in 2016.

Her father was the seat in the 1980s.
