Shillong, Nov 25, : At least 12 of the 18 party MLAs headed by Mukul Sangma have joined Trinamool Congress, party sources claim.Sushmita Dev, Trinamool Congress’s Rajya Sabha member and a close associate to Sangma, told IANS that the opposition leader has joined the Trinamool Congress along with 11 other Congress MLAs.
Eight of the 12 Congress legislators who joined Trinamool are Garo Hills MLAs, and four are Khasi Jaintia Hills lawmakers.
The latest political development is that the Trinamool Congress, despite not winning any seat at the 2018 Assembly elections to the 60 member assembly, became the main opposition party within Meghalaya house.
An ex-chief minister of Meghalaya, Sangma, is reported to be upset by the September appointment of Vincent H.Pala, a Shillong Lok Sabha member, as the president state congress.
According to reports, Sangma met Trinamool’s National Secretary Abhishek Bangerjee in Kolkata last month. This triggered speculation amid a reported rift in the Congress in the northeastern region. It was a courtesy meeting, Sangma said.
