Marathi web series “Jakkal” tells the story of Pune serial murders

Mumbai 2 September : Marathi web series “Jakkal” will uncover the serial murders of Joshi-Abhyankar which took place in the Pune of the 1970s.Through the program, viewers will learn how far four young men with no criminal history and belonging to middle-class families, go when they commit such an egregious crime.
The show is produced by Vivek Wagh, who has been working in the production for four years.Wagh has also been awarded the National Award for the Best Investigative Documentary in 2021 based on this same topic.

It is produced by Jio Studios, Shivam Yadav and Kartikee Yadav of A Culture Canvas Entertainment production.

The show’s creator Vivek Wagh stated, “A city like Pune was known as a pensioner’s Paradise and a capital of culture There were two crises that occurred during the period.

The first was National and the second was the Jakkal emergency.It scared the people of Jakkal.”

“I would like to know whether Jakkal was an initials or a compulsion that led these men to commit such a horrible crime.Another important issue is: was Jakkal an artist who became a murderer or a murderer turned artist.”

The serial murders of Joshi-Abhyankar were ten murders perpetrated by students from the commercial art field Rajendra Jakkal, Dilip Sutar Shantaram Kanhoji Jagtap, and Munawar Harun Shah of Pune between January 1976 and March 1977.The murderers were hanged for their crime on the 27th of November the 27th of November, 1983.

Anurag Kashyap’s debut feature as a director the 2003 film “Paanch” was also inspired by the serial of Joshi-Abhyankar murders.The film, which featured Kay Kay Menon, Tejaswini Kolhapure, Aditya Shrivastava, Vijay Maurya and Joy Fernandes however, never saw the light of day, as it remained unreleased due to its horrific content.

“Jakkal” will be launched in the month of October 2023.
