During the month of Karthika, devotees wear Ayyappa mala and perform strict initiations on a regular basis till Makara Sankranti.On the day of Sankranti, worships makara jyoti and removes the garland in the presence of Swami at the Sabari Temple.
But for many days wearing this garland, the Lord is worshiped with great devotion.
Those wearing Ayyappa mala wear black.
Usually wearing a garland in winter helps absorb heat and protect the body.Also the black color protects us from wild animals while traveling in the jungles for the Sabarimala Yatra.
