Unicef: One third of children in Greece are at high risk of becoming poor

Athens 12 December : .According to Unicef’s latest report, one in three children of Greece was at high risk of social exclusion or poverty.
The UN agency reported in its annual report on the condition of children in Greece that 1,689 children lived in institutions.However, 42 percent of refugee and migrant children have access to education.

A strong legal framework has promoted the right to children from abuse, neglect, violence and exploitation in Greece.However, Unicef Greece reported that a fractured system of child protection does not provide adequate protection for children’s needs.

According to Eurostat 2020 data, Greece has the lowest percentage of children in poverty in Europe (EU), at 31.5 percent, as compared with 24.2 per cent in the EU.

Greek NGOs have also played a role in supporting the children.

One of the major NGOs, “The Smile of the Child”, said that it has supported more than 1.8 million children and their families over the years.
