Popular playback singer Shankar Mahadevan has been awarded an honorary doctorate from Birmingham City University (BCU) for his exceptional contributions to music and the arts.The prestigious ceremony took place at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire on June 23.Reflecting on this special occasion, Mahadevan expressed his privilege and gratitude, attributing the recognition to his body of work.

The announcement of Mahadevan’s honorary doctorate was made by Andy Street, the mayor of West Midlands County in the UK, during a trade mission event in Mumbai back in November of the previous year.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain and legendary guitarist John McLaughlin, who joined Mahadevan to commemorate this milestone achievement.
Mahadevan emphasized the impact of receiving an honorary doctorate from an artist he has long admired, stating that it sets a goal for him to achieve.
He believed that witnessing such recognition bestowed upon an artist inspires young individuals to pursue their dreams with determination and strive to reach similar heights.Mahadevan recounted how he looked up to maestros like John McLaughlin and Ustad Zakir Hussain, and their presence at the ceremony further reinforced the significance of this honor.

Following the formal ceremony, students from Birmingham City University performed several of Mahadevan’s compositions, including the popular song “Mitwa” from the film “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna.” The audience was later treated to a mesmerizing performance by the legendary Shakti trio: Ustad Zakir Hussain, Shankar Mahadevan, and John McLaughlin.They enthralled the crowd with Bollywood numbers, and Mahadevan captivated everyone with his timeless classic, “Breathless.”
