Yes.Supreme Court delivers a sensational judgment which give respite to the 11 million NRI’S.The apex court passes the judgment on giving voting eligibility to the non-resident Indians.The Supreme Court today directed the central government to enable e-voting by NRIs within eight weeks.

The apex court bench headed by Chief Justice of India H.L.Dattu passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Pravasi Bharat chairman Nagender Chindam.Court granted four weeks time to the Centre to inform what steps it had taken to implement Election Commission’s suggestions in this regard.

In 2010, the government allowed NRI’S voting rights, but the rules required them to be present in their constituency on the day of voting.As per the current rules NRIs who were out of India for more than six months at a stretch were not allowed to vote in elections.

The new e-voting procedure includes filling-up a blank postal ballot paper and then mailing it back to their respective constituencies by post.This would enable an estimated 11 million NRIs globally to participate in elections without having to travel to India for the purpose.
