New Delhi, Sep 11 : “Bhabiji Ghar Hai actress Soma Rathod has racked up lots of fame with the performance of her character Amma Ji in the comedy-drama, but she admits that her journey as an actor not easy , and she faced body shaming and rejection in her profession.Soma told me: “My journey as an actor in this field has been an emotional rollercoaster ride.While you’ve probably heard tales of actresses who have gone under the knife or undertaking weight loss regimens to gain weight to gain entry into the business, my experience is different because I had to put on weight.”
The actress revealed that she was being rejected in auditions because she was neither fat nor thin therefore she decided to gain weight.”When I made the decision to be an actor and began going to auditions, I wasn’t too fat or too thin.Since I didn’t satisfy any of the requirements I was turned down.After that, one of my classmates suggested that I gain weight in order to be placed as one of the “overweight actors.”
“I increased my weight in order to be noticed by casting directors who are looking for roles for plus-size actors which aren’t very typical in the industry we work in,” added the actress who also appeared in shows like “Pyar Me Thoda Twist” and ‘Jija Ji Chot Par Hai’.
Not only was she rejected, the 38-year-old actor was shamed for her weight, and this was very uncomfortable for her.She stated: “Being overweight makes us feel that we aren’t welcome in the world.People are prone to shame us.We can’t even find clothes in our size because they don’t manufacture them.”
Despite all chances, she never thought of leaving the industry of entertainment.”Yes it was a bit painful however, I have never thought of the possibility of quitting my job due to of it.I decided to remain strong and never make fun of my weight, and you are not able to be a mockery of me.Some people may not be as brave as youare, however you must always love and accept your self,” she added.
After securing a spot in the business The actress is not eager to lose weight and claimed that this is her distinct identity.
“I am extremely happy to play Amma Ji as it has created a unique brand for myself on Indian television.
There are very few actors with the same character in my league in the industry in terms of role.Because I am overweight I am able to take advantage of roles that are specifically created with my size in the mind of” she said.
She stated that initially when the character of Amma Ji was presented to her, she was sceptical about it because she was required to play the role of the mother of Manmohan Twari, who is played by Rohitashv Gour in the sitcom.
She stated: “I was nervous about playing the role of a mother as the job was presented to me.I was asked to play the mother of Rohitashv Gour who is not only twenty years younger than me, but is also 20 years younger than I in the field.However, our director Shashank Bali, and the writer Manoj Santoshi convinced me to accept the role since they were impressed by the potential of the character and my interest.”
“And Today, I cannot be grateful enough to them for giving me the role of Amma Ji who has made me known as a household name.Personally, I also love the character.
She is someone that no person would want to play with.However, at the same, she is someone who loves her bahu (daughter-in-law) in the most unique way.In all honesty, I would like all the real-life saasu mamas (mothers-in-law) to be supportive of their bahu in the same way.”
In regards to the bond she shares with her co-actors Rohitashv and Shubhangi Atre, Rathod said: “My bond with Rohitashv Ji and Shubhangi Atre is beyond any imagination.We are the best of allies and friends in the world of crime on set.I’ve always been a joyful energetic, fun-loving, and joyful person.At first I was anxious about having to share the screen with Rohitashv Ji due to the fact of his age, however, he made it more comfortable and we have a strong bond offscreen too.We try to be with one another when we are shooting.I also enjoy creating funny reels with the cast,” she concluded.
