Lucknow 11th of September : A growing number of individuals in the age range of 35 to 45 in Lucknow are being diagnosed with osteoarthritis (deformity in joints).Experts who attended the continuing medical education (CME) program as well as a live surgical workshop held at the Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS) declared that a lack of exercise as well as poor diet as well as pollution are among the main reasons of the growing number of these patients.
Dr Swagat Mahapatra, a professor of RMLIMS stated, “About seven years ago the share of young people in the overall instances of osteoarthritis in the city was between 5 and 6 percent. The group of older people now accounts for 20-25 percent of the cases recorded in one month.”
He stated that “Young people eat a lot of junk food and don’t exercise regularly which results in the loss of muscle and being overweight. This eventually puts pressure on joints , which can cause bone degeneration.”
King George’s Medical University (KGMU) Pro-vice chancellor Prof.Vineeet Sharma stated, “If anyone feels pain in knees or another joint, she/ he must consult a physician as it could be a sign of osteoarthritis.Early intervention can reverse the condition with the right treatments and bio-intervention methods.”
RMLIMS senior faculty member Dr Sachin Awasthi told RMLIMS, “If knees keep making sounds and are stiff at times and the condition continues longer than 6 weeks, it indicates that the cartilage that protects the surfaces of joints has changed , or shifted. In such instances urgent medical intervention is necessary to avoid further damage. If left untreated, it could cause irreparable damage to the knee joint.”
