The Hague, Sep 3 : The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is on the lookout for new variations of Covid-19 that “continues to evolve at a rapid rate,” an agency official stated. “According to data available, Europe is still experiencing the flow of the Omicron BA.5 variant, even though the highest point of the summer wave occurred only a just a few weeks ago in several of the states that are members of the EMA.” Marco Cavaleri, Head of the EMA’s health threats and vaccines strategy, said at an online news conference in Amsterdam on Friday.
“The EMA keeps monitoring the situation to understand the underlying trend of the latest wave and to be ready for any new waves that are often very difficult to forecast,” he said.
The official pointed to the current situation in India as an instance, in which the Omicron subvariant BA2.75 is spreading more quickly than its counterparts.Xinhua news agency reported.
“As the virus continues to evolve at a rapid pace and we keep on top of the latest variants to be aware variations of significance,” Cavaleri added.
“In particular the case of BA2.75 currently being spread in India must be closely monitored.”
On Thursday on Thursday, the EMA recommended the use of two vaccines that have been adapted to the Omicron variant of Covid-19, produced by Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna.
