New Delhi, Sep 2 : Twitter, which is embroiled in a legal dispute with the Indian government over blocking of content orders, has banned 45,191 accounts of the Indian users in the month of July for violating of its guidelines the microblogging platform stated in its annual compliance report, released on Friday.Twitter shut down 42,825 accounts that were promotion of child sexual exploitation, non-consensual nakedness as well as similar content in India and blocked another 2,366 accounts that promote terror, the company stated in its monthly report on compliance based on the latest IT Rules, 2021.
The microblogging platform was able to receive 874 complaints in the country via its local grievance system between June 26 and July 25 and was able to resolve 70 complaints.
In June, Twitter had banned more than 43,140 accounts of the Indian users.
“While we encourage anyone to express their opinions on our platform, we will not accept behavior that smacks, taints, ob or threatens, dehumanizes or employs fear to suppress the voice of other users,” Twitter said in the report.
In the newly-enacted IT Rules 2021, big social and digital media platforms with more than 5 million customers, are required to release each month compliance reports.
Twitter is the recipient of complaints in its Grievance Officer-India channel relating to verification of accounts, access to accounts as well as seeking information, assistance or help about the account, or the enforcement action of Twitter.
Additionally, Twitter processed 124 grievances that were based on appeals against account suspensions.
“These have been resolved, and appropriate responses were provided.We rescinded none of the suspensions of accounts after analyzing the details of the circumstances,” said the company.
The report was released after whistleblower Peiter Zatko, the former director of security for Twitter claimed that the Indian government forced the company to “hire an agent of the government to work for it” as well as “grant access to personal user information” an allegation that was denied by Twitter.
In May, Twitter moved the Karnataka High Court against the Indian government’s decision to remove certain content on its platform.
