New York, Aug 28 : Emma Raducanu played down injuries on the day of the US Open after the defending champion felt discomfort during her training on Friday.
Raducanu experienced an explosive climb at Flushing Meadows in the past year and became the first player to take home a grand Slam in the same year as she won a surprise victory in New York, reports DPA.Raducanu was the British number one defeated Leylah Fernandez in the final of last year’s tournament winning a major victory after racking up 10 straight wins, not losing a single set.
However, her dreams of winning the title looked in danger when she repeatedly halted her session with Ekaterina Alexandrova on Friday.She was consoled by her coach Dmitry Tursunov after appearing upset by discomfort in her left hand.
Raducanu left court for treatment and returned to complete the session and she insists she isn’t worried about the incident.
“I experienced a few minor things, I got two of blisters, and a little bit of an itch in the corners,” she explained.”It’s an example of those days when you feel a little away of it.
“I cannot really explain myself, honestly.I’m sure that everyone in this room has experienced a similar day.I don’t have any concerns of an issue, none.”
Raducanu has had a difficult year with a variety of injuries, and registering 13 wins as well as 15 losses in 2022.
While the 19-year-old isn’t trying to boost expectations in advance of the US Open, she expressed her joy in returning to the venue of her biggest win.
“It’s very good to be back in New York,” Raducanu said.
“It’s wonderful to be here after having completed an entire year on the tour, and having played in the majority of the events.
“I’m extremely content with the things I’ve accomplished this year as well as how I’ve managed to come out of certain situations.I’ve definitely got incredible memories in New York.
“I believe that the idea of defending a title is something that the media is able to make up.I’m taking it one match at one time.
“Every player is competent in this draw.I’m just focusing on the things I’m doing and my own path.As I stated last year,”I’m simply going to do things my way.”
Raducanu was a notable victories against Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka in Cincinnati last week, will play Alize Cornet in the first round at Flushing Meadows.
