New Delhi, Aug 24 : While the Congress is expected to announce its schedule to elect the party’s next President on Sunday the Congress Working Committee (CWC) will meet in virtual meetings in the meantime as Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi will be in India to attend a medical exam for Sonia Gandhi. “Congress President Sonia Gandhi will be travelling abroad for medical checks.
She will also be visiting her mother in a state of ill health prior to when she return to Delhi.Rahul Gandhi as well as Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will travel with the Congress President,” Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said in a statement issued on Tuesday night.
According to reports, Sonia Gandhi might not be in the country at the time that Congress leader meet to elect the party’s next President, since she will be spending time with her mother who is ill after her medical check-up.
In the end, Rahul Gandhi will return to address the party’s massive event at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi against unemployment and price increases on the 4th of September.He is also expected to be the leader of the party’s ‘Bharat Yodo Yatra starting from Kanyakumari on the 7th of September.It’s not clear whether Priyanka Gandhi will return for the ‘Mehangai par Halla Bol the gathering on September 4.
The Congress is currently in crisis internally with the party’s top party leaders Anand Sharma, Ghulam Nabi Azad and , most recently, Jaiveer Shergill quitting important posts in the party.
Another leader, a senior one Manish Tewari has taken a stand that was different to the position of the party on the Agnipath scheme of the Centre Agnipath scheme, was pictured with Premier Narendra Modi on Wednesday at an event in Punjab however sources claimed he was invited to the event as an MP from the state.
In the meantime the Sachin Pilot camp in Rajasthan has remained silent after reports surfaced that the Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot is likely to be the next Congress President.
The Congress has two major events scheduled in September: the Mehangai Halla Bol’ rally as well as the national-wide ‘Bharat Yod Yatra’ Sonia Gandhi is unlikely to be in attendance in both of these events even though Rahul Gandhi is expected to be there.
The Congress has called a session of its working committee the 28th of August to determine the timetable for the election of the next President of the party.
“A virtual meeting of the CWC will be held on the 28th of August at 3 pm to decide the calendar of dates of the elections of the new Congress President.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi will preside over the CWC meeting,” tweeted K.C.Venugopal General Secretary (Organisation).
Sources say they heard that Sonia Gandhi requested him for the same in a meeting on Tuesday that she held prior to traveling abroad for a medical examinations.
But, Gehlot has said that he discovered the issue solely through media.
The Gehlot camp has not yet confirmed the news sources have confirmed that the Congress is considering alternatives to the Gandhis for the highest position this time around.
It was revealed that the Central Election Authority of the Congress is waiting for an approval from the working committee of the party to announce the timetable for the election of the new Congress chief.The old party is in in the hunt of an unanimity nominee for the top job after a refusal by Rahul Gandhi.
Sources said that the most popular option is Ashok Gehlot and the Rajasthan Chief Minister stated Monday Rahul Gandhi should reconsider his choice as it could cause demoralisation to the workers of the party.
