By Ashe O Washington 21 August : A large majority of Americans would like investigations into the former president Donald Trump to continue but many would like to observe the day as a “protest day” for the country that is being guided in the wrong direction from politicians.
Americans are discontented with their lives, with three quarters saying the country is heading in the wrong direction.
A record 58 percent believe that America’s best times are over, and 61 per cent declare that they’d be prepared to carry a protest banner for a day since they’re angry the way things are going, according to an NBC survey conducted in the aftermath of the FBI raid on the Mar a Lago residence of Trump revealed.
The poll provides a mixed picture of the midterm elections in November 2022 situation for the House of representatives, with President Joe Biden’s job satisfaction dropping to the low 40s.Republicans have a narrow lead on the preference for Congress but Democrats close to tying Republicans in enthusiasm for voters with “threats to democracy” taking over the price of living being the most important issue for the nation’s voters.
“Politically to Joe Biden and Democrats, the news isn’t all good,” said Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt of Hart Research Associates who conducted this study with Republican pollster Bill McInturff of Public Opinion Strategies.”Heading towards Labor Day, the political dynamic could be more tense (for Democrats), but they must also get faster and more effective,” he added.
McInturff acknowledges that the climate is better for Democrats since the beginning of the year. However, he insists that the most important fundamentals that matter – the President’s job ratings and the direction of the nation are not in line with the party.”America is singing blues and that’s not good news for the Blue Team in November,” he said.
The NBC News poll was conducted between August 12 and 16, after a turbulent period for Trump during which the FBI conducted a search of his Florida residence, and when Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani, his ally, declared he was an “target” in the probe of possible election interference in Georgia and also as an ex- Trump business executive pleaded in tax fraud in the Manhattan judge in New York.
According to the poll the survey found that 57 percent of registered voters believe that the investigation into alleged wrongdoings by Trump should be continued, while 40% think they should be stopped.
According to the party 92% of Democratic voters and 61 percent of independents, but only 21 percent of Republican voters believe the probes into Trump should be continued, media reports suggest.
While the majority of voters favor the investigation to continue by 17 points , rather than stoppingthem, the margin that holds Trump accountable for the attack of January 6 at the US Capitol is surprisingly much smaller.
A total of 50 percent of respondents believe Trump is solely or mostly responsible for the Jan.6 events , which is five points higher than the maiden NBC News poll, before the House committee investigating the attack began holding a series of telecast hearings. This is in contrast with 49 percent who say Trump is only a little accountable or not at all that’s down 6 points from the May.
Biden’s rating for his job remains in the lower 40s because the poll was conducted following a strong period for the President which included Congress adopting climate and health care legislation , as well as the Bureau of Labor Statistics reporting that 528,000 new jobs were created in the month of June. The survey doesn’t reveal any significant improvement in Biden’s popularity, with 42 per cent of registered voters appraising of Biden’s accomplishments and 55 percent disapproving. In May Biden’s approval rating was at 42 percent for registered voters, and 39 percent for all adults.
The President has the highest approval ratings among Democrats (79 percent), Black voters (68 percent) urban dwellers (50 percent) as well as women (47 percent) however, he is a bit sluggish in several of his lowest approval ratings among Latinos (40 percent), men (36 per percent) and those aged 18-34 (36 percent) rural residents (21 percent) as well as Republicans (7 percent).
Concerning national issues 40 percent of Americans agree of Biden’s handling of the economy (up 7 points in the poll of adults in May) and 39 percent approve of his handling of foreign policy (down 3 points in the adult population).
In the run-up towards the midterm elections of November The poll shows that 47 percent of registered voters favor Republicans having control of Congress and 45 percent prefer Democrats in the lead.In the poll of May, both two parties were in a tie in this regard, with 46 percent each.
Democrats are closing the gap in enthusiasm despite Biden’s approval rating and GOP’s lead in the vote for Congress (albeit within the poll’s margin of error) The NBC News survey shows an improvement for Democrats since the beginning of the year.
According to the poll that 68 percent of Republicans have an elevated amount of enthusiasm in the coming election, compared to the 66 percent of Democrats.
The GOP’s advantage of 2 points is lower than the 17-point advantage in March, and from 8 points in May.
The pollsters that conduct the poll believe that the increase in Democratic excitement due to the June Supreme Court decision overturning the 1973 Roe v.Wade banning abortions, and the President’s signature of an executive order to safeguard abortion rights at all costs.
“The Supreme Court ruling has changed the political landscape,” said Horwitt.
In fact, the poll finds the majority (58%) of people opposed of the Supreme Court’s decision that overturned Roe v.Wade and a constitutional right to abortion, in contrast with 38 percent who are in agreement.
The poll also shows that “threats to democracy” has taken over “cost of living” as the most pressing problem facing the country and that the health care/climate law that President Biden put into effect this week has more support than not so popular (42 percent of people think it’s an excellent idea, while 31 percent think it’s an unwise choice).
Being so upset that you carry a protest flag for a whole day is a sign of the deep discontent in the American public.
Three-quarters of people (74 percent) believe that the country is heading in the wrong direction. This is the fifth consecutive NBC News survey showing this figure in the 1970s.
In addition, 58 percent believe that America’s best times are over This is the highest percentage of this question since 1990.Another 68 percent of people believe that it is the case that the US is in an economic downturn.
Six-in-10 – 61 % of them are so angry by some issue that they’re ready carry a sign of protest for a whole day. When asked what their protest sign would say, the most popular responses from Democratic people include “Women’s rights”, “Equal rights”, “Prosecute Trump” and “Abortion rights”.
The most popular responses among Republican people include “Impeach Biden”, “Protect our freedom”, “Protect 2nd Amendment” as well as “Stop Democrats”.
The NBC News poll was conducted between August 12 and 16 of 1,000 registered voters, including the 750 who were reached via cell phone .It is a total margin of error of plus-minus 3.1 percentage points
