“The Omicron variant has been increasing in significance, especially in the northern part of the country,” Karl Lauterbach, Minister of Health, told broadcaster ARD.He also said that Omicron incidences were high in neighboring countries Denmark, and the Netherlands, which likely explains this trend, Xinhua news agency reported.

Lauterbach stated, “We now have a dynamic environment — it is quite different than what we had one week ago.”

According to him, Omicron cases will double in four to five working days.

According to RKI, the number of Covid-19-related infections in one day decreased slightly from last week, to 42,770.

The fourth-wave peak was reached in December. However, seven days later the incidence dropped to 207.4 per 100,000 people.

RKI advised that less tests were performed at work and in schools, as well as reports being delayed in Germany during Christmas. This could lead to an insufficient picture about the epidemiological situation.

The government established stricter Covid-19 regulations to slow down the Omicron wave. These rules included contact restrictions for both vaccinated people and those who have been recovered.

There was also a ban on gatherings and assemblies nationwide in the New Year.

Lauterbach will present “good suggestions” for further steps in Omicron fight, such as updated quarantine regulations and contact restrictions, by next week.

We must prepare this properly, as hasty actions are wrong.
