Supreme Court asks the AP government to seek SEC permit

The apex court has rejected the plea of AP government seeking amendments over SEC direction on Local body elections.

The war between Andhra Pradesh government and State Election Commissioner Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar continues as the Supreme Court asks the state government to seek SEC permission over development works.

It is a setback for the state government which is trying to get upper hand over SEC in the wake of the AP local body elections.

While telling Mukul Rohatgi, who is representing the AP government, Chief Justice SA Bobde asked the AP government, has the SEC stopped any development in the State, and directed to apply to the EC first.

The justice has cleared that the court intervenes in the matter only if the SEC denies the permission.

However, the court has adjourned the hearing for four weeks as the advocated informed that the Local Body elections just postponed but not cancelled.

Nevertheless, the AP government now needs to apply for the permission of the SEC over implementing the development works in AP.Earlier, SEC postponed the local body elections in the State due to Covid-19, which is against AP CM’s will.Currently, EC has decided to hold the local body election in the State.
