Several Top Australian Cricketers Being Offered Huge Sums To Play In Uae Twenty20 League: Report

A number of high-profile Australian cricketers are offered massive amounts to participate in UAE Twenty20 league: According to a report

Melbourne 5 August IANS) Australian cricket is facing the possibility of losing a number of elite players to the lucrative UAE Twenty20 league in January next year. There are reports that 15 of players were offered “contracts with a value of up to AUD700,000.00 per year to leave the Big Bash League (BBL)”.
The story in Sydney Morning Herald quoting senior cricket sources, stated that, Cricket Australia (CA) is not just facing the possibility of losing batting legend David Warner to the UAE T20 league, but also the “scale of the attempted raid on Australian players” is unimaginable.

The report also stated that CA and the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) could have to come up with an approach to assure the players that they’re “not getting left behind by the world” of the world, by remaining committed to the sport in the country”.

It was also reported the fact that Chris Lynn, whose contract with Brisbane Heat was not renewed in recent times, is still in the UAE league even as he is considering a deal with Adelaide Strikers, though signing a contract with the BBL agreement will cause “contractually challenging for Lynn to also play in the UAE”.

As CA is also working to persuade Warner to participate in the BBL this summer, the report noted that the chief executive of the sport’s governing body Nick Hockley, as well as ACA director Todd Greenberg are getting “countless calls” from players.

Greenberg has been reported to be trying to convince players of the need to participate in the BBL, “in some cases with less money than the market rates that are offered elsewhere” The report said.

“I’ve been extremely impressed by the maturity of the players in response, since after a discussion and exchange and a little more context, they’re not only thinking about the immediate future,” said Greenberg.

“They possess this real feeling of caring about the game.

If they didn’t, they’d be mercenaries, and would take the things that are in the front of them. However, they’re actually taking a matureand thought-through approach to this issue and working to become a part of the solution. It’s all about establishing trust with your team members as well as the relationships you establish with them.

“Sometimes when you’re working closely with players, you’re required to explain to them what they require to hear and not what they would like to hear. We’re not in the business of being sycophants – sometimes you need to bring the players up, talk to them as an adult and provide them with accurate information, and let them make informed choices with an eye on the long-term,” he added.

“I do know that CA must adhere to the principles of a salary cap for all players which includes Dave (Warner),” Greenberg said.”But obviously, they have to make the best offer to keep Dave here. It’s a matter of trying to ensure that you’re getting the top players and that there is some fairness in the system as well as model to ensure that everyone of players have the chance to play and are compensated according to their abilities.

“This is a problem that will not go away and that’s why we need to come together and increase the revenue from the sport, so that we can compete.”
