The weather warning will remain in place until Wednesday for southern England areas where people could be shut off by flooding roads. The risk of flooding that is swift or deep could pose a threat to lives.

The Environment Agency has put out 19 flood alerts in areas of the Midlands and south-east England.

It’s a sudden ending to the heatwave of last week as well as following weeks of very little rain, which has led to drought and left the land drained.

Authorities have moved Yorkshire into official drought status on Tuesday. The move followed areas of the South West, southern and central England and the East of England.

Experts say heavy rainfall flows off land that is extremely dry which causes surface water flooding and won’t soak into the soil to ease drought-stricken areas.

Photos and footage posted to social media shows floodwater and torrential rain that swept through towns throughout the southern part of England and Wales including Newquay in Cornwall, Bishop’s Tawton in Devon, Haywards Heath in West Sussex, Port Talbot in south-west Wales as well as Bridport in Dorset.

Scotland also saw disruptions to travel on roads and rail networks on Tuesday, following heavy rain.

ScotRail advised passengers to be prepared for delays on certain routes with the restriction of speed in place.

Meanwhile, in Perth, Network Rail stated that it is working with floods at the station.

In the meantime swimmers are being warned of pollution and sewage at a number of beaches along English coasts, which is linked to the torrential rain.

According to the data gathered by the environmental campaign group Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) there has been storm sewage discharges into the waters of beaches in Cornwall, Devon, Sussex, Essex, Lancashire, Lincolnshire, Northumberland and Cumbria.

A spokeswoman from SAS stated that other warnings about pollution in the area may not be related to heavy rain.

anyone who is planning to visit the coast is advised to consult the interactive map available on the website prior to they swim.
