Rome, January 1, : .Sergio Mattarella, the nation’s President, has expressed gratitude to the Italian people for “their maturity and sense of responsibility” over the past two years.Mattarella (80) was elected Italy’s 12th president on January 31, 2015.His seven-year term will expire in January 2022.His repeated statements made it clear that he will not stand for reelection.
In a fifteen-minute speech, he stated that he had been reflecting on the past two years together.He spoke out from Quirinale presidential palace.
Mattarella stressed the “invaluable heritage of humanity”, the sacrifice of doctors, nurses, and others who are dedicated to fighting the coronavirus.
He thanked the people for their faith in science and followed anti-pandemic guidelines.Then, he chose to get vaccinated against Covid-19.
He noted that “This is almost all Italians” and he wanted to express gratitude for their responsibility-taking maturity.
Italy recorded over 144,000 infections on December 31st, as Omicron virus strain 1, which is driving up infection rates, making it the most affected country since pandemic started.
Nevertheless, the vaccine has been administered to 85.8% of those who have completed it in the past 12 years.The country has been able to contain most of the serious cases and reduce the need for emergency and hospitalization.
He noted that vaccines were a useful tool not only because they provide invulnerability, but also because they reduce the risks and damages for others and ourselves.
Mattarella stated that Italy had shown signs of economic recovery and managed to manage the pandemic well, which was praised by other European countries.
He said, “My best wishes to you are stronger than ever.Along with the need for the New Year to be viewed with confidence, hope, and a need to see Italy with optimism and hope, I feel the need for each of you to show Italy’s true face, hard-working and creative and supportive.”
