New Delhi, Sep 2 : Google on Friday announced the second phase of the pilot program in India as well as other countries to allow users to explore different payment options for purchases made on the Play Store.Every non-gaming developer in India, Australia, Indonesia, Japan, and the European Economic Area can now sign up in the pilot program and offer the option to tablet and mobile users.
“With the next stage of Google Play’s user-choice billing pilot, any developers that are not gaming are able to provide a second billing option in addition to Play’s billing system for their customers,” a company spokesperson stated in an announcement.
“We will share additional information in the next few months, as we continue to build and refine with our pilot partners,” the company added.
In the course of this year Google unveiled a new pilot project to investigate user choice in billing in applications on Google Play, allowing participating developers to provide users with an alternative method of billing in conjunction with Google Play’s existing billing system.
Google stated it will continue to work with this trial, it will continue to develop its platform and expand the possibilities that developers and users have all while “maintaining its capacity to invest in the ecosystem”.
In the past two years, Google moved away from the one-size-fits-all pricing model and today 99 percent of developers are eligible for a service charge of 15 percent or less.
“We are always taking in feedback from the outside and evaluating changes to our business model that allow the Android ecosystem to thrive and compete,” according to Google.
Users will always have the option of using the Google Play billing system.
The company claims that reasonable service charges will continue to be charged in order to help fund the company’s investments in Android as well as Play Store.
Spotify has already announced Google Play’s new billing system in conjunction with the current system of billing.
