Covid can directly infect the kidneys: Study

New Delhi, Nov 30, : According to new research, SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes Covid-19, can infect human kidney cells.Specifically, the proximal tubules are key gatekeepers in the organ’s waste-filtering function.
Acute kidney injury can be found in up to 25% of patients with Covid-19 cases.Clinicians suspect that such injuries may be a side effect of the immune system’s sudden release inflammatory proteins and/or cytokines to fight the SARS-CoV-2 viruses.

Tissues and organs can be damaged by “cytokine storms”.

“We introduced the virus onto organoids, surrogates that have 11 types of cells found in kidneys.

Only one cell type was infected out of all the others.Only one of the cell types got infected.

The study was published in JCI Insight. It used SARS-CoV-2 strains that were lab-modified with a novel fluorescent genetic gene.

This allowed the team to identify which kidney structures became infected.

Freedman stated that the finding means that clinicians should think about Covid-19-implicated renal infections in the same way as they think about lung or heart infections.

This is to monitor these organs for poorer functioning going forward.

He said that there is a possibility of a “long-hauler” effect that could lead to chronic kidney disease.

Therefore, patients who have recovered should get lab tests three to twelve months later to confirm that their kidneys are functioning and stable.

Unfortunately, there is no way for clinicians to determine if certain Covid-19 patients are more susceptible to kidney infection. However, a pre-existing condition could be a risk factor.

Covid-19 is not known to cause kidney damage. Many people in these situations end up on dialysis temporarily to restore kidney function until their organs recover from the immediate infection.

Organoid cultures can also be used to identify therapeutics that will help infected kidneys recover.

Freedman stated that now that we know what SARS-CoV-2 does in the kidneys, we have begun testing different treatments.
