Drinking water supply to about 850 villages, including municipalities of Kalyandurg, Rayadurg, Hindupur and Madakasira, was affected as Srirami Reddy drinking water project workers went on strike from Saturday midnight over their six-month long pending salaries and arrears.
The workers of Sri Rami Reddy drinking water project have been staging protests over their pending arrears and also demanding salary hike.
As the authorities did not meet their demands, the workers went on indefinite strike from midnight of Saturday. The workers had reportedly switched off pumps at Penna Ahobilam Balancing Reservoir and other maintenance points of pipeline for more than two hundred kilometres in both Anantapur and Sathya Sai districts.
Superintendent Engineer (Rural Water Works) of Anantapur district told media that steps were afoot to meet the demands of the striking workers.“We are pursuing the issue with the workers and assured to clear their wage dues,” the official said.
Drinking water is being supplied through PABR project after both Tungabhadra and Krishna river waters stored in the reservoir and separate pipelines maintained to meet needs of drinking water for rain-deficit parts in the area.
