Melbourne 13th September : Australia Test skipper Pat Cummins believes it is not realistic for him to lead in the three formats of the game, considering his responsibilities as pace bowler as well as the highly aggressive nature of the sport. The captaincy controversy has gained momentum after white-ball captain Aaron Finch retired from One-day International cricket following a lengthy slump in form in the 50-over match and injuries.
Finch however will continue to lead the T20I team as Australia try to win the ICC T20 World Cup at home in October and November of this year.
The ODI captaincy position becoming vacant, a variety of names include the likes of David Warner, former all-format skipper Steve Smith and Test captain Cummins are being floated around.
Cummins has been absent for his 28th of the last 66 ODIs.This means he could be unable to play in certain series or matches due to the type of bowling load he is expected to take on should he is made captain of all formats.
“I think that if you going to play all formats and every game I don’t think that’s real,” Cummins was quoted by The West Australian.”Especially as a fast bowler, I think it is important to find a time to rest. But I think you’ll be able to handle that too.
“It’s not something I’ve thought about.I am extremely satisfied with being captain of the Test side .I do not think that they (Cricket Australia) have to make any decisions too quickly,” added Cummins, who led his team to an four-point Ashes victory followed by a 1-0 test series win over Babar Azam’s Pakistan in the subcontinent.
Cummins has recently urged Cricket Australia (CA) to lift the ban on leadership roles on batting star David Warner for his involvement in the ball-tampering incident in the 2018 series of Tests in South Africa.
CA are given two months to choose who will replace Finch as their ODI captain and Warner also has thrown his hat in the contest.
“Obviously (Pat Cummins) is the main player (on whether he is keen to be the leader of the ODI team), he is the Test captain and has the first chance,” Warner said.
“But every time you are given to be captain, it’s an honor. For me, it’s in the hands of Cricket Australia.I’m able to focus on what I need to do, which is playing the bat, and getting as many runs as I can.My phone is always available (if CA want to talk). In the time of the day, what’s done was accomplished in the past.
“The benefit is that there’s an all-new board.I’m always happy to sit down for a conversations and discuss anything they want to discuss,” said Warner.
