By Hamza Ameer Islamabad September 8 : Since Imran Khan’s controversial comments have raised questions about the selection of Pakistan’s chief of Army Staff (COAS) in November the Defense Minister Khawaja Asif announced that the government in power is gearing up for an extended legal fight against the former prime minister in the days ahead.
Asif said that some steps and actions have already been taken to stop Khan’s ongoing targeted attacks on the military establishment as well as other institutions, including the judiciary, and added that further actions like this will be implemented in the coming days.
“Our lawyers are looking into the issue and will act in accordance,” the Defence Minister announced while speaking at an event for journalists in Islamabad.
“The legal proceedings against Imran Khan are based on concocted instances of the political victimization he had launched during his time in office.Legal proceedings will not portray any political vendettas or settle scores on political motives.”
Terming Khan’s recent comments on the selection of the army chief of the future in which he had stated that “the current corrupt leadership would prefer to bring in an army chief of their choice in order that he will not be held accountable for their corrupt behavior and the theft of the money of the people” as a result of inimical plans supported by the enemy’s plan to undermine the nation’s defense and economy, Asif made the comments in reference to India.
“After the declaration of independence, our enduring adversary India tried to undermine Pakistan by focusing on our economy and our armed forces. In Faisalabad Imran Khan spoke out regarding COAS appointment.
In the past few months, Imran Khan clearly targeted these two areas,” he stated.
As if to remind Khan of the way he was removed from the presidency, Asif said that the former premier was ousted by a no-confidence motion following his aides decided to quit him.
“But following that Imran Khan began attacking forces and calling them names like neutrals or animals,” he said.
“Imran Khan has claimed that the top general in line to become the COAS will protect the misuse of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) leadership,” Asif said adding that “there is no requirement in their oaths to defend the political leaders if they do, and they violate their own vow”.
“Imran Khan has been recorded for saying that they can’t be neutral, and he requested security from them.”
