Thiruvananthapuram Sixth of September : The harvest festival Onam approaching there was a lot of speculation as to whether the 28,000 staff members of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation ( KSRTC) will get their two-month salary due.There is good news: that they will be paid and a sum of the amount is Rs 100 crores and was approved by the Pinarayi Vijayan government for the reason of.
This occurred after Vijayan as well as the trade union representatives held discussions about the issue, and it was brought to attention of the chief minister.He was informed that family members of the employees have lost their patience and the situation could get out of control.
The option to pay salary was made with the requirement that the employees’ duties would shift from a double shift of 16 hours to a single shift of 12 hours.
The current structure of duty is that every employee who performs 16 hours of double duty is entitled to the day off but under the new rules this won’t be a valid option and will be only a single job of 12 hours.
If they work an additional 4 hours , that will be considered to be overtime and they will receive more than the minimum wage and allowance for dearness.
However, this new policy according to sources hasn’t been received well with employees.
To resolve the issue the CMD of KSRTC Biju Prabhakar is scheduled to meet with the officers.
For years, the KSRTC has lived an existence that is based on a hand-to-mouth basis and each time, the state government has needed to step in to ensure that salaries are paid.
The KSRTC was founded in 1965.It was able to make profits only in that year, and since then, it has been a constant in the red.The losses accumulated have transformed into a staggering number.
The general impression is that it’s an elephant in the room because of the high unionisation of staff.
In spite of the greatest efforts of a handful of tough taskmasters in the chairmen’s role and managing directors however, they failed in controlling in the unions.Every year, the KSRTC was progressively worse worse.
