New Delhi, Sep 4 : Industrialist and former Tata Group Chairman Cyrus Mistry who died in an automobile crash in Maharashtra’s Palghar on Sunday, taken on the role of the Chairman of Tata Sons in 2012 at the age of 44, but did not stay long in the position.Mistry who was the sixth Chairman of Tata Sons, succeeding Ratan Tata was removed without ceremony from the post in October of 2016 over disagreements regarding the direction of the conglomerate.
He was the child of Pallonji Mistry, head of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group, a multi-faceted conglomerate that had started as a construction firm founded by Pallonji Mistry’s father in the 19th century.
Pallonji Mistry passed away in June of this year aged 93.
Mistry was born in 1968 and studied civil engineering at Imperial College, London and then earned a master’s diploma in management at London Business School.
He joined the family’s company in 1991 and was appointed director of Shapoorji Pallonji & Co.Ltd.
Cyrus Mistry took over his father’s position in the Board of Tata Group after his retirement in 2006.He was appointed Director of several Tata companies in addition to assuming his duties with Shapoorji Pallonji Group.
He was appointed Deputy Chairman of Tata Group in 2011 and was appointed Chairman following Ratan Tata’s resignation in the year 212.
Cyrus Mistry was the first non-Indian to head the Tata Group, as he was a holder of an Irish passport.
However, his time as Tata Group chairman ended abruptly in 2016 following disagreements between him and the Tata family over the management of the conglomerate.
Cyrus Mistry had challenged his removal by accusing the board of incompetence as well as of discriminating against minority shareholders.In 2018 the National Company Law Tribunal rejected his request however, the decision was reversed by the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal in the year 2019.
In the end, in 2021, the Supreme Court had upheld Mistry’s dismissal.
