New York, Aug 30 : Colombian qualifier Daniel Elahi Galan caused an surprise in the US Open on Tuesday, placing fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas the exit door with an intense 6-1, 6-0 7-5, 3-6, against the Greek player on Tuesday.With the assistance of 41 victories, the world’s No.94 made it to the second round of Flushing Meadows following two-hour and 48-minute battle in his debut as a main draw player in the season’s final major.
The Colombian’s 26th birthday was his most significant win of his entire career.
“Definitely one of the most memorable moment of my professional career,”” Galan was quoted by atptour.com.”Definitely the most memorable game of my professional career.and not just due to the nature of the circumstances, but also the opponent.I’m very content.”
Galan who didn’t lose a single set in qualifying and won the first 11 games of the match against Tsitsipas with an impressive game of aggression.
“I believe he (Tsitsipas) started to play more effectively in the third set.He served better than the previous two sets and I was placing the serve in the court without placing pressure on him.He was always in control,” Galan said.
“I believe he was really at ease throughout the two sets.I tried to alter the position a bit as I returned, and it changed quite a bit because I was in a position to return (deeper) as well as he was not as aggressive with the ball that he was on, which meant I could play some more.”
Galan was in the match with a record of 0-6 against top-20 opponents.He was in the third round of Wimbledon and his determination was evident against Tsitsipas.
The Greek has been beaten in the opening round of the US Open in two of his five appearances, and has not advanced to the second round.He made 57 unforced mistakes as compared with 28 players who won in his loss according to atptour.com.
“He was the dominant player,” Tsitsipas admitted.”I simply couldn’t engage in the game.”
