London 27 August : UK households need to “look at” the way they use energy according to Minister of Energy Nadhim Zahawi said in response to demands for urgent intervention by the government to curb the rising costs. It comes as the outgoing prime minister Boris Johnson predicted a “tough” few months ahead, but he promised that energy prices will eventually drop amid dire predictions of the effect the 80.06 percent increase in the price cap could affect millions of the most vulnerable homeowners across the UK as reported by the DPA news agency.
Zahawi said on Friday the government is not stifled by the leadership battle and is focusing on preparing options for the person who is chosen as the winner.
The government’s Conservative party is in the process of choosing the next leader, which is expected to be announced in the first week of September.
The Chancellor assured reporters that assistance from government sources is on the way but he also acknowledged: “We know that’s not enough. We’ve got to do more.We have to ensure that this isn’t a permanent plaster, and that in the long-term we continue to aid those who are most vulnerable and don’t have a cushions, and that’s exactly what I’m going to try to do.
“And we’re currently putting together options for households as well as business for the new premier on September 5th to make these decisions.
“So my message to you today is “We’ll give this PS37 billion to the people to help them right the time being, and after that, more will follow because we know that this is going to continue in January, and of course, up until April and the following year.We must keep fighting’.”
Zahawi also said that it might be the right time to pay more attention to how we use energy.
“The truth is that we must all take a look at our energy usage. It’s a challenging moment. There is conflict across the continent.” he said.
This week the Chancellor is meeting with the heads of generating companies such as Orsted, Newcleo and RWE to discuss how they can do to help ensure that markets are efficient for consumers.
The Treasury stated that he was “clear” that companies “need to be more supportive of their customers” instead of being dependent on behavior changes or relying on the Government alone to aid people.
In the meantime, Johnson, entering his last few days in office, stated that the government offers an “big and huge package of assistance as well as support”.
“There’s an influx of cash coming in over the coming months, and through the fall and winter. However, that pipeline is clearly likely to be increased by more cash , which the Government will surely announce in September.”
Opposition politicians as well as the industry regulator Ofgem and campaigners were together on Friday in asking the government to act urgently, while charities warned that families all over the nation could be pushed into poverty by the rising energy costs.
