New Delhi, Aug 25 : The election for Congress president is likely to be delayed for some weeks, sources told Thursday.The timetable will be finalized in the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting scheduled for August 28.Sources suggested that it was possible that instead of the elections being completed on November 21, the entire process could now be completed in the month of October or November.The decision regarding the new schedule will be decided by the Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Sunday.
Sources also claimed that the decision to delay the deferral has been taken because the party’s leaders will be engaged in the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ which is scheduled to start on September 7 and will conclude on September 7.Gandhis including Sonia Gandhi are abroad.
The Congress has called a session of its Working Committee on August 28 to decide on the date for the next election for the post of president of the party.
“A virtual meeting of the CWC will be held on the 28th of August 2022 at 3:30pm to approve the precise timetable of times for the elections of the Congress President.Congress President Smt.Sonia Gandhi will preside over the CWC meeting,” tweeted K.C.Venugopal the party’s General Secretary Organisation.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot is the most popular candidate to fill the Congress president’s job.Sources have stated that Sonia Gandhi had requested him to run during an event she attended prior to traveling abroad to get medical treatment and check-ups.
The Gehlot camp has not confirmed this development however sources have said that the Congress is considering alternatives to the Gandhis for the top job.Gehlot himself has stated that these developments were being discussed in the media, but he was unaware of it.
The Central Election Authority of the Congress was waiting for an approval from the working committee of the party to announce the date for the election of the new Congress President.The grand old party is in the search of an unanimity candidate to fill the highest job after a refusal by Rahul Gandhi.
