Mexican Prez backs ending US immigration policy

Mexico City 25 Aug : Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has said he supported the US decision to end the controversial “Remain in Mexico” policy which required asylum seekers of all nationalities to stay in Mexico as their cases were processed in America.
In a press briefing Wednesday afternoon, Lopez Obrador referred to an US Supreme Court ruling in June that confirmed President Joe Biden’s decision to end the program which was created in by his predecessor Donald Trump, reports Xinhua news agency.

“Now that the court has ruled that asylum seekers in the US can stay in the US.We think it’s a good decision,” Lopez Obrador told reporters.

“It is an internal policy of the US government.We have never accepted the idea of becoming a third country or a refugee camp for waiting to see how things will be resolved in the US,” he added.

Mexico as well as the US are facing an unprecedented crisis of immigration in recent years as violence and poverty worsened by the Covid-19 epidemic force thousands of thousands of mostly Central American migrants north in seeking of jobs.

The total number of immigrants detained by the US at the border with Mexico between October 1st, 2020 through September 30, 2021 amounted to 1,734,686, an all-time record.

In the meantime, Mexico has deported more than 114,000 illegal immigrants in 2021 and detained between January 1 through the 13th April of this year according to figures from the government.
