Tokyo 16 August : Organic and water matter were transported to Earth by asteroids, says Japan’s Hayabusa2 space probe. The research findings, published in the journal of science Nature Astronomy explains the mystery of how the Earth was made up almost entirely of magma that was molten in its beginning was coated in water, Kyodo News reported.
A group of Astronomers from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency drew the analysis based on samples taken from the Ryugu asteroid, which was discovered by the Hayabusa2 probe in space.
“In broad terms there is a possibility that tiny celestial bodies carried things that created life and water on Earth,” Motoo Ito is the senior researcher of geomaterials science at the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology was quoted as saying.
In December of 2020, a spacecraft that was on a six-year journey by Hayabusa2 delivered more than 5.4 grams of surface material to Earth from the Ryugu asteroid that is more than 300 million kilometers away.
While Ryugu particles had a similar chemical resemblance to the composition of Earth’s waters, there were minor differences, leading scientists to suggest that Earth might have also got its water from sources apart from asteroids according to the report.
A study of eight particles which total around 59 milligrams, was found in the Ryugu asteroid that was found in nearly all of them organic matter , and water that is not in liquid form, but rather a hydroxyl group composed of an oxygen atom linked to one hydrogen atom with an identical composition to the composition of water that is found in cosmic dust as well as comets.
Protected by protected by a “cradle” of phyllosilicates, they were believed to have experienced extreme environmental changes after leaving the solar system’s outer space where organic and water matter are found.
Organic areas that are composed of a substance called aliphatic hydrocarbon were also discovered within the coarse-grained phyllosilicates. The coarse grains that surround them are more tolerant to heat, could prevent water as well as organic matter from being changed by the surrounding environment according to the report.
Hayabusa2 went off Earth in 2014, and arrived at its permanent place just above Ryugu in June of 2018 after traveling 3.2 billion kilometers on an elliptical orbit around Sun over a period of more than three years.
The probe came close to the asteroid twice during the next year, and collected the first ever subsurface samples from an Asteroid.
Researchers have previously discovered that Ryugu was originated from a mother organism that was formed in the solar system’s outer space, traveled into the solar system’s inner space and its particles are enriched with amino acids, which are organic compounds that are believed to be the “source of life.”
