Iraq gets 50 IS prisoner from Syria

Baghdad 14 Aug : Iraq announced that it received fifty prisoners, who were militants of the Islamic State (IS) captured earlier in Syria.
“Through joint agreements and understandings, Iraq received 50 IS members which are Iraqi citizens, and are from the Syrian side,” tweeted the Security Media Cell (SMC), an outlet of the media that is affiliated with the Iraqi military.

The transfer of the prisoners took place in the Rabia border crossing in the northern province of Iraq of Nineveh according to SMC, Xinhua news agency reported.

“Some of the prisoners are local leaders of the IS and are responsible for terror attacks.” Tahsin al-Khafaji, the spokesman of the Iraqi Joint Operations Command, was quoted by the an official Iraqi News Agency.

The Iraqi Interior Ministry’s Agency of Intelligence and Federal Investigation has taken in the prisoners for interrogation and will initiate necessary legal action against them the SMC said.

Iraq has received a number of batch of Iraqi as well as foreign citizens affiliated with the IS who were detained in Syria.

In 2014, IS militants declared themselves to be a caliphate in portions of Iraq as well as Syria However, thousands of IS supporters were killed or detained following the fall of IS militants in Iraq in 2017, and then in Syria.
