Guwahati 6 August : The banned militant groups United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) and a Yung Aug-led faction of the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagalim (Khaplang) have demanded the complete boycott of the festivities of the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence Day in five northeastern states. The groups also demanded the observance of a general strike in five states of the northeast -including Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, and Meghalaya.
In an official statement the militant groups warned the public “at every level” not to take part in all kinds of fake Independence Day activities.
“Our demonstration calling for the to boycott of the fake Independence Day of colonial India will be a complete shut down from 00.00 hours until 18:00 on August 15th,” the statement said.
It is said that the Covid-19 virus has affected the socio-economic development of the world at large and the region of West-Southeast Asia (WeSEA) region.
Thousands of indigenous farmers have lost their homes to floods and landslides.
“After 75 years of so-called Independence the people of India are struggling with the burden of debt, GST, rising prices of essential commodities, and a myriad of other issues. It’s inhumane historical, irrelevant and insignificant for a nation that is unable to support the afflicted in this day and age of decreasing living standards, to be celebrating the 76th preposterous Independence Day on August 15,” the statement said.
The ULFA-I that in the last year two times extended the unilateral ceasefire and abstained from calling for bandh and boycotts on the last year’s Independence Day, and this year’s Republic Day celebrations, recently has recruited a few youth to its militarized cadres.
