Jagdeep Dhankhar elected 16th Vice-President

New Delhi, Aug 6 : Former West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Saturday was elected the 16th Vice-President of India.
The Election Commission announced that Dhankhar – the NDA candidate, was victorious in the Vice Presidential election in which he was up against the candidate of the Opposition Margaret Alva.

In the event that the tenure of Vice-President incumbent M.Venkaiah Naidu ends on August 10, lawmakers of both houses of the Parliament voted on Saturday to select the Vice-President who will succeed him.

Utpal Kumar Singh, the returning officer for the vice-presidential election, stated that of 780 voters only 725 of them voted for the vice presidential vote.Of the 725 votes cast 15 votes were deemed to be invalid and 710 votes were valid.

According to the Election Commission, Dhankhar secured an aggregate of 528 first-preference votes while Alva got just 182 votes.
