Kolkata, December 30, : , A week after West Bengal Gov Jagdeep Dhankhar claimed that education in West Bengal is being ruined by’shocking unionism,’ he claimed that 24 state universities have had vice-chancellors appointed without his permission or against orders.Dhankhar serves as the ex-officio chancellor of all state-run universities.
“VCs from 24 universities were appointed by @MamataOfficial to disregard the law.” The Governor tweets that these are “ex facie” in disregard of certain orders or without the approval of Chancellor-the Appointing Authority.
These universities are Presidency University, Calcutta University, and Jadavpur University.
He said that these appointments do not carry any legal sanction, and that he would have to act if the recall is delayed.
This warning follows closely on the heels that vice-chancellors and chancellors of private universities did not attend a Raj Bhawan meeting last week.

The Governor tweeted that it was “shocking unionism”.
Dhankhar had on 20 December invited vice-chancellors and chancellors from 11 private universities to talk about ways of improving the state’s education system.
They refused to go to the meeting, and wrote to Governor Dhankhar expressing dismay at the Omicron situation.
On December 23, the Governor convened the same meeting again and promised the vice-chancellors, chancellors and covid protocol adherents that it would be held.However, none of them attended.
It was really disappointing that 11 chancellors/vice-chancellors didn’t show up for a meeting with the governor.
He tweeted that the same thing happened for 2020, when vice-chancellors from state universities did not show up to the meeting.
These developments are concerning and show the rule of law and not the rule of the ruler.
It is a state government that makes appointments to vice-chancellors, while ignoring the chancellor.Dhankhar said that he was now forced to have a firm view and reexamine all appointments.
