By Akshay Acharya Mumbai, December 27, 2012 : .Manish Gupta’s recent crime movie 420 IPC starring Vinay Panag, Ranvir Shorey, and Gul Panag has received a lot of positive attention for its story telling style that focuses on the intricacies Indian Penal Code.
Manish has credits for films such as ‘The Stoneman Murders (writer and director), Sarkar (writer) or ‘Section 375 (writer).Recently, Manish spoke to IANS about the process of making a film which explores the various courtroom procedures in a case of financial fraud.
He explains the origin of 420 IPC by saying that he got it from three years’ worth of research for his previous courtroom drama titled Section 375.During which I discovered court proceedings in cases involving economic offences.I thought this was a great idea for a movie.
He says, “I did further research and discovered that economic crime is common among people of high economic status, intelligence, and educational pedigrees.” The court proceedings require more brainwork, which lends a more cerebral basis for a movie.
Manish took on the research for the movie’s production.
He says that there was not a research team. The research was done by me alone, attending many court hearings, interviewing court personnel, and policemen.
Because I was already doing a substantial amount of research on ‘Section 375,’ I already had a good deal of background material.
Vinay mentions the importance of Vinay & Ranvir as lead actors in the movie. He says, “Vinay & Ranvir inject a lot believability into this narrative.” They are both brilliant actors, which is no surprise, but they also have the ability of absorbing their characters in such a way that viewers see them as real people, not just an actor.
Ask him whether there was a lot more improvisation on sets.He chuckles, “Not really,” because his scripts are often written very clearly.
As I am the director of ‘420 IPC, and all my films, I also wrote the dialogue scripts. So, while I was writing the film, I had already directed it on paper.
One can see that his films have a lot of grey characters and stories. He explains his love of grey colors by saying, “Reality is not perfect.
Every human being has good and bad traits, but to different degrees. This is exactly what my films portray.”
