Juba, November 20, : , A UNSC delegation has arrived in South Sudan for follow-up on the execution of a peace accord that resolved years of violence between different factions within the country’s ruling party. The South Sudan President Salvakiir met with the delegation to discuss security issues.
Late Thursday’s statement by the UNSC delegation stated that “achieving peace” is an individual responsibility.
They pledged tremendous support for the government of South Sudan in achieving peace and stability.
According to Xinhua, the revitalized peace accord led to the creation of South Sudan’s transitional government, which was established in February 2020.
The biggest obstacle to this process is the need for the unification of the Armed Forces.
As part of the initial phase of peace negotiations, the agreement to unify the forces of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM/A), was to be executed.
Fears have been raised that failure to fully implement security provisions of the Peace Pact may lead to the disintegration of the agreement.
The UNSC delegation asked President Kiir at the Thursday meeting to implement all aspects of the revived peace accord effectively before the next phase of review, which is scheduled for April 15, 2022.
The UNSC statement states that the UNSC delegation “came to obtain information about the effects of sanctions on development, on activities of South Sudan’s government and the path forward.”
A new Security Council report is due to be published, and will provide a basis for the consideration of lifting sanctions against South Sudan.
President Kiir requested that the delegation not rely on information regarding South Sudan from sources without a base or accurate information, and instead seek out information from reliable channels to help them make the best decisions.
According to the statement, the President stated that they would continue to make mistakes based on incorrect information about South Sudan received from wrong channels.
South Sudan fell into conflict after a dispute between President Kiir (and his Deputy Machar) caused divisions within the Army that left soldiers loyal to their leaders fighting.
In the wake of violence resurgence in July 2016, a 2015 peace agreement was dissolved.
