Swedish PM calls for decoupling electricity, gas prices

Stockholm 3rd of September : Stockholm, Sep 3 : Swedish government is calling for separating gas prices from electricity price systems since this could lead to lower prices for electricity.
“It is not fair to have Swedish consumers and businesses purchase Swedish electricity which is produced at a low cost and yet must pay astronomical prices due to the fact that the majority of our neighbors depend upon Russian gas,” Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson stated at an event on Friday.

The Swedish government will insist for electricity prices in the European energy market be separated from the cost of gas which has risen unreasonably high because of Russia’s “energy war” against Europe According to Andersson.

Decoupling gas will result in the cost of electricity in the southern part of Sweden being reduced by half Minister of Energy and Digital Development Khashayar Farmanbar declared in the same press conference.

The Prime Minister has also stated that she would be working for a broad coalition in the European Union to bring down the cost of electricity that has recently reached records, Xinhua news agency reported.

The cost of electricity in Sweden particularly in the southregion, has risen to record-breaking levels in August of this year with an average cost of 3.05 Swedish crowns ($0.28) per kWh and peaking at of around eight crowns.
