The controversial law banning dance bars in Maharashtra was put on hold by the Supreme Court today.In 2014 Maharashtra Government imposed ban on dances in bars which provided employment to thousands of women.
The dancers’ union had opposed the ban, saying many of its members would be forced into prostitution if the state refused to allow dance performances.Consequently, the Indian Hotel and Restaurant Association approached the Supreme Court.
After hearing the plea Supreme Court today imposed stay on Maharashtra police act banning dance performances in various places including bars, hotels restaurants in the state.
Court said that Maharashtra police will ensure that dignity of women was not affected by the dance performances.
Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis has said that his government would abide by the Supreme Court’s decision.
He tweeted ‘’Although SC interim order mandates regulation instead of ban on dance bars,Govt still favours ban.We will examine & press our demand in SC.’’
